“Teens Can Act” Youth Theatre

Shakespeare time cast 2015

The cast of Shakespeare Time’s 2015 production of The Tragedy of Macbeth.

Now in its sixth year, our theatre program began in 2012 as a volunteer project designed and implemented by a local theatre professional with an MFA in Shakespearean dramaturgy and a passion for working with youth. Saddened by the lack of a theatre program in the Winston-Dillard School District, this volunteer began donating several hours of her time a week to offer free Shakespeare workshops at the Winston Teen Center in December of 2012. When her students requested an opportunity to perform in an actual play, the volunteer responded by mounting a full, student-acted production of Romeo and Juliet in May of 2013.

When this proved successful, the volunteer returned to the Teen Center for the 2013-2014 school year, teaching a variety of Shakespeare-related workshops covering everything from texts to costumes to history, and directing a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in May 2014.  After two years of donating her free time, the volunteer was hired on as an Americorps Youth Programs Specialist, in part  through a generous grant from the United Community Action Network, working in this new capacity to strengthen and expand the Shakespeare Time youth theatre program. To that end, the Douglas County Cultural Coalition awarded the program with a generous grant for the purchase of stage weaponry and a costume rack for the 2015 Shakespeare Time production of The Tragedy of Macbeth, followed in 2016 with a production of Shakespeare’s hilarious farce, The Comedy of Errors in 2016 and another grant from the DC Cultural Coalition to purchase theatrical makeup.

2017 saw a change in directors and venue with the adapted spring performance of C.S. Lewis’ classic, “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.”  Again, our thanks to the Douglas County Cultural Coalition in their generous support of costuming unique to the script.
